Get the sound of a classic tape unit in your productions with the IK Multimedia Space Delay. This downloadable plug-in can work in your DAW or standalone to get you the sound of a Roland RE-201 Space Echo, a classic delay unit. This software uses dynamic convolution and physical modeling to capture the character and response of the original unit.
First produced in 1974, the hardware offered three playback heads, a variable speed motor, and a built-in spring reverb to boot. It came with 12 operating modes for a wide range of rich, warm effects. This led to the unit’s widespread popularity: you can hear the RE-201 in songs from Bob Marley, Brian Eno, Pink Floyd, Portishead, Sublime, Sonic Youth, Randy Rhoads, Radiohead—and that’s just a drop in the bucket.
The RE-201 Space Echo used tape to create its delays, making it a tape machine of sorts. Whether used as a recording medium or a delay effect, tape machines have characteristics which are the result of many interdependent factors working together. So, IK Multimedia examined each component of the RE-201, analyzing it down at the spec level, to tone and feel of this analog tape-based delay.
This software is compatible with Mac and Windows platforms. It will work in AU, VST2, VST3, and AAX formats as well as the TrackS standalone app.
