Steinberg WaveLab 10 Pro is software meant for the mastering process, whether you’re preparing albums, podcasts, interviews, radio programs, or books on tape. WaveLab Pro 10 is designed to aid you in producing audio deliverables for the CD plant, for streaming, or for multichannel platforms. As such, the software provides tools aplenty for audio analysis, audio restoration, sonic shaping, and other processes integral to the practice of mastering.
The previous version of WaveLab came with a customizable spectrogram, an expanded Spectrum Editor, a wavelet visualization display, a new suite of forensic plug-ins, and other new tools for handling errors and artifacts. The previous iteration also saw improvements to the Render settings, clip-gain implementation, cue-sheet importation, and auto-saving.
WaveLab Pro 10 picks up where 9.5 left off, offering new features particularly exciting to mastering engineers. A reference track has been introduced to the Audio Montage workspace to facilitate quick A/B comparisons; now you don’t have to use a third-party plug-in to accomplish glitch-free, latency-free switching between affected and reference tracks. Video playback support has also been added with drag-and-drop importing, resampling, and dynamic editing of any video’s audio.
The implementation effects have been vastly improved, meaning you can now pitch to your hardware chain and record back to digital with greater ease and flexibility; among mastering engineers, this was a highly requested feature, and it is now elegantly handled in WaveLab 10. On the editing front, WaveLab now lets you select your own external editor, so you can take full advantage of tools such as SpectraLayers or iZotope RX if you prefer different workflows.
Many more features are now present, and for a full explication and breakdown of these features, please peruse the Features section below this paragraph. WaveLab 10 is compatible with both Mac and Windows platforms and as always supports third-party plug-ins in your audio chain.
A Reference Track can be routed to the main outputs, to the Playback Processing Section, or to a user-defined reference track output, where unused audio outputs on your hardware can be utilized for playback.
If the sample rate of the included audio file doesn’t match the sample rate of your montage, you can create a resampled copy of the audio. You can also undock the video playback window and resize it.
If you select an External Effect ASIO plug-in as an insert effect for an effect slot in the Master Section, the audio is sent to the corresponding audio output, processed in your hardware effect, and returned via the specified audio input to the plug-in. When any External Effect bus is used in the signal path, WaveLab will use the new Render in Real Time option for rendering.
You can include up to three different external editors, easily setting the path to the applications that you want to use. After defining an audio range for which you want to transfer to the external editor, you can use the new Editor control in the Edit ribbon to send your selection to it (nondestructively in the Audio Montage), and then update the file/clip in WaveLab.
In the Audio Editor, edit marks allow you to see where audio parts have been edited, making it possible to recover earlier versions of the edited parts without losing the changes you have made to the rest of the audio.
Divided into dedicated Clip, Track, and Output Inspector sections, the Montage Inspector provides a color tool (for the selected clip, or for all clips on a track when the Track area is selected), a name field (which displays the current name of the selected clip/Track) and tabs for Effect, Gain, and Slot. Each has access to a comprehensive range of menu commands.
You can record with optional Master Section plug-ins, including external effects, and record multiple files at the same time, each with different plug-ins, and each to different output file formats if necessary. Activating the live input can be done at any time, even if no file is open in WaveLab.
