Based on a vintage piece of hardware, the XILS V+ from XLIS-Lab recreates and builds on a versatile machine that was used by many well known artists and musicians in the 1980s. The forty-nine note virtual instrument comprises three sections – a string machine, human voice synthesizer and a ten-band vocoder, with all three sections able to be combined in any configuration. A stereo space effect, a basic reverb and a phaser, along with an arpeggiator are also available.
The string and human voice generators feature a Top Octave Divider Oscillator (T.O.D) that provides the unique sound. The methodology behind T.O.D utilizes a single, very high frequency square wave oscillator that is then “divided” to provide the twelve tempered frequencies over the four octaves. A benefit of T.O.D is that there is only a single tuning circuit for the whole keyboard, and when using the envelope glide all the notes are modulated in the same manner.
